Day 2: Victoria outskirts to Duncan

Friday 15 July 2018

Did we mention we would also be hiking?
Sooke wilderness and the Malahat must be one of the hilliest areas in the country. Oh so many hills – every downhill punished with an interrogatory uphill of some 16% gradient or more. Some short, but fierce. Some long; still fierce. And that one section of Canada we know we will never have to cycle again – because we weren’t supposed to in the first place.
All sorts of terrain today – gravel paths through wildflowers and forests, single track, less-than-single tracks, the incredible Kinsol trestle.
Overnight was the lovely Spinnakers brew pub and guest house in Victoria, excellent calorie-loading breakfast at the rewarding Dogs House in Duncan as our road crew Matt helped us drop the car off at the end of the ride. The expected lunch stop near Shawnigan Lake didn’t exist, making for some mild afternoon tetchiness … Finally found reward at the Black Swan pub – excellent.

Total today: 56.4 kilometres

Total completed: 74.0 kilometres

Total to go: LOTS!

Day 2 9
Clearly we missed this sign’s mate at the beginning of this trail sections. “Biking not permitted” should read “Biking not possible”
Day 2 10
But we did get a view over the Saanich Peninsula for the trouble

The Kinsol Trestle is one of the tallest free-standing and most spectacular timber rail trestle structures in the world. It’s 187 metres long and stands 44 metres above the salmon bearing Koksilah River
