Day 3: Duncan to Chemainus via Cowichan Lake

Saturday 16 June

#cowichangrind

A day of “fifths” over some 74km. First fifth through incredible, wet and muddy old growth deciduous forests. Second fifth a long slow gradual uphill grind through the woods into Cowichan where the only fun was swerving to avoid the snakes sunning themselves on the gravel path. Third an unexpected long uphill drag out of Cowichan – pretty though. Fourth when the trail gifted us our first freewheel of the day from 40km and the last fifth a nasty up-down-up slog on tar roads into Chemainus.
Good day on the foodie front: Said goodbye to our Roadie Matt after a great breakfast at the Old Fork in Duncan; lunch was excellent at Jakes on the Lake in Cowichan, superb fresh juices at Majik on the trail to Cowichan and dinner at the wonderful Odika in Chemainus for the second night in a row. Bed is once again the functional Fuller’s Lake motel …
Wildlife for the day – a few deer, so many snakes, butterflies, birds, and a few old hippies.

Travelled today: 70.0km

Total distance: 144km
