Day 24 Elko to Fernie BC

We had company today! Our roadie Liz joined us for the ride from Elko to Fernie – a 47km up down up kind of ride.

This being Bron’s birthday we brought a mini bottle of Moët along to share after a couple of hours on the trail. The early wide path changed into a rocky up-down rutted, rocky double-track which challenged Liz to her first wipeout (a couple of scrapes and bruises) but which presented lovely views of the peaks above. But we were horrified that in the next 5km of gravel road we picked up 10 beer cans – 8 of them Bud Light. Assholes.

Somehow the whole ride was a lot more uppity than any of us had expected and once we turned onto the single track it got worse. Don’t get us wrong – it was lovely and we had beautiful scenery of the mountains and glacial valleys, but did it have to be so uphill? Quote of the day from Liz: “This hill is so f-ing unnecessary.” We climbed through forests and beautiful undergrowth and met a few trees (Liz) and fellow mountain bikers along the way.

However, we were still seriously relieved to see the town of Fernie below us which meant we HAD to start heading down soon. And we did – lovely sweeping single tracks in a network of downhill trails that ended the ride on a note of serious fun amongst so many fellow mountain bikers.

We have to add kudos to the guys at Gearhub for replacing Bron’s troublesome dropper post and for their great service. Awesome bike shop!

The day was rounded off with a fabulous dinner with our friend Jen Koury who drove from Calgary to cook us an amazing birthday dinner.
