Day 46: Melville, SK to Russell, MB

Another province, another time zone! Hello Manitoba 🙂

Today was our 118km “rest day” – mostly easy riding with a tail wind. We started out on a lovely single track in the early morning light followed by 30km on thick gravel (yuk).

For about 20km we then had a provincial road pretty much to ourselves, which meant we could sit up and freewheel with the wind behind us, but there was a complete dearth of wildlife, despite many signs warning of deer leaping across the road.

We made good time though – getting to Tony’s place in lovely Churchbridge after 70km in time for them still serving breakfast. Churchbridge is a charming little town – murals on the buildings, a war memorial and a monument to the local designer of Canada’s 125th anniversary coin.

A few roadworks and detours later we said goodbye to Saskatchewan and hello to Manitoba with a flying descent into the valley of the Assiniboine River, followed by a long, slow climb out.

Russell is also a lovely town – all old buildings, hanging flower baskets and great steel arches over Main Street.

We are over halfway for this 10-day leg. But more headwinds are forecast for tomorrow …

Today’s distance: 119km on Treaty 4 and Treaty 2 land

Today’s climb: 262m (100m of that in less than 2km)

Total distance: 3,620km
